My daughter is 5 & came home from kindy one day & said she loved macaroni cheese. I made her cheesy pots, which is macaroni+mixed veges+cream sauce+cheese. She said it wasn't the same. I am from Australia & the only place I have seen macaroni cheese is in a microwavable container. The guest cook at my daughters kindy was american & has now left. I have tried to google it & have gotten 10,000 different recipies. Is this a common meal in America? I want to know what is in a home made macaroni cheese and how do I make it? Any recipies?

For some reason American kids absolutely love macaroni and cheese. The cheesier and creamier the better.
Keep it simple and avoid adding anything to it.
The simplest way would be to get it ready made by Kraft Macaroni and cheese which they grow up on. Barring the availability of it ; it can still be made at home easily.

Elbo Macaroni noodles cooked and drained.
Add real butter to the noodles until dissolved about 1/2-1 stick
Then add some heavy cream or milk. Start with 2/3 cup
Then add shredded Cheddar cheese
A dash of salt and pepper

You can add more or less milk depending upon how creamy she wants it.

You can also add different cheeses with the cheddar but most kids like it with only cheddar.

It is a common meal for children in America because it is quick and agreeable to most kids and most parents are often in a hurry due to arriving home late or trying to prepare something quickly for eating before leaving to a school event like sports or concerts.

In an 8x10-inch baking dish, alternate layers of macaroni and cheese sauce. Sprinkle with paprika, if desired. Bake in a preheated 350° oven for 20 minutes, or until hot and bubbly.

I grew up on home made mac and cheese. Very simple to make. I use a big stew pot, boil enough elbow macaroni to make half a pot full. Add 1 pound velveeta cheese (1 box), 2 cups milk, salt and pepper to taste. Let the velveeta melt and once melted, it's done.
