You should get some reading materials on clicker training. A lot of praise and treats will make your dog want to work.

Besides being completely consistant in everything you do (same command when the dog does somethng wrong and you catch it, say types of punishments, same expectations EVERY day), I find that NILIF concept works wonders.... and doesn't get yyour dog as heafty as posative reinforecement training.
The basic concept of NILIF is that the dog must do something to get something in return. If he wants a bellyrub, he must be calm and lying down. If he wants on the couch he must sit and be invited up. If he wants food, he must sit and wait patiently. This concept not only teaches the dog well, but uses AFFECTION rather than FOOD as the rewards (which, for most dogs, is just as effective).

When my dog was a puppy, I went to different dogfood websites. I just typed the names of the companies into a search engine to find their websites. I found some great dog training tips on http://www.puppychow.com/Fun_Stuff/index.aspx
Dogs of course are like people. Some are a little quicker, but remember that your dog deserves patience and lots of love even if it does not learn everything you try to teach it.
I took my dog's paw picked it up and shook it. I said "Shake" just as sweet as I could. Put her paw down petted her head and gave her a treat. I made a big thing of it and said smart doggie! I gave her a kind of treat that she did not normally have, but really liked. I said Good Dog! After a while of doing this I gave her opportunity to put her paw up.
Don't try to do it all in one setting, as the dog will get tired or stuffed from too many treats.

Be prepared to give lots of cheerful praise. "Goood"
Have a pocket full of treats.
note: "Praising" alone can do. but, having treats instill comand a wee bit faster.
Have dog on leash. dog standing calmly at your side or looking at you from front. (eye contact is always very effective.)
give command one time. "sit" gently pull up on leash. possibly
touch above back legs once or twice to put in sit position. Offer paises. after about 5 reps. dog should understand.
"sit" now offer treat when accomplished.
once mastered.
then "down" to laydown. have dog in sitting postion, treat in front of nose hand command down to floor, say down and have dogs nose follow to floor once in laying postion offer praise & treat.
patience and consistancy. Good luck.

i think that the best way to teach your dog some tricks is by consistently using the same word for a particular trick and not using different ones, coz different commands for the same trick will make your dog confused.
and btw, i don't really advise giving treats to your dog in exchange of them doing the tricks. coz if they get used to you giving them treats, they'll like not do what you tell them if you dont give them something in exchange.
