Alright,

First YOU HAVE TO UNINSTALL THE PRESENT DISPLAY OR VIDEO DRIVER before you start off with even upgrading the same.

Now, to uninstall it....

Go to start > My Computer(Right-Click on it) > Properties

Here, go to Hardware > Device Manager

You will obtain a list of Hardware installed in your comp.

Select the Diaplay("Display Adapters") > Right-Click on the Driver so installed(For Example : Nvidia...) > Uninstall the Driver

Take a second to read the Warning and then say OK.

This might take anywhere from a few seconds(in my new comp) to a few minutes(in my old comp).

NOTE: Make sure nothing is running in the background.
When I say nothing, I mean nothing.

Finally, it will ask you to restart the comp. Do that.

Now, for the second phase of reinstalling the driver :

If you have downloaded the driver or got it from a CD , just run the setup.exe file.

It will do the rest. And restart the Comp and you are done.

There is good chance that you mihgt be prompted to install hte driver directly through the Xp's driver manager, just cancel it.

NOTE: If the uninstalling takes way too much time then you can do the same by going to Xp Safe Mode(just press F8 while starting the comp before the loading of Xp and select Safe Mode).

Hey, I know this helped, but there is always that brilliant comps that eat your head. So, its my duty to say, all the best.

Peace out.

The easiest and most reliable way to uninstall display drivers is with the "Add/Remove Programs" window. This should always be the first method you try. All but the most ancient drivers from NVIDIA and ATI can be removed this way. Most other recent display drivers can also be uninstalled in "Add/Remove Programs".
Then just reinstall your video driver
