Religion is human beings aspiration to understand and relate to that which is transcendent. It is the deepest need of human beings. They will never find true meaning and purpose in life if they can not relate with the transient one.

Religion is man, by his own effort trying to attain the favor of God. It is doomed.
Christianity is God reaching out to man---therefore based on God's abilities--unconditional love for those who accept the sacrifice of Christ. In Christianity man acknowledges the need of a savior.
In religion--man tries to save himself.
God is what is big, not the people---one is creator--the other is creation.

Religion simply means one's nature. For example the nature of sugar is to be sweet, the nature of salt is to be salty. We cannot separate sweetness from sugar or saltiness from salt. So in a sense we can say that religion of sugar is to be sweet and that of salt is to be salty. Talking about our religion... religion of living beings, we need to first understand who we really are in order to understand what our nature is. You might have heard this sevral times, or you might not ave come across it at all, in any case I will start from scratch. All I am talking to you about is from the knowledge I gained from books of Srila Prabhupada the founder of ISKCON. Coming back to our point... it is easy for us to understand that we are not this body we are something different from this body. The body grows, ages, dies, but our individuality is never lost. What is the difference between dead and living body.... both have the same chemical composition but a living body has the living spark, called the soul. THe spirit soul has opposite characteristics when compared to the body. The nature of this soul is what we define as religion. THe soul by nature is full of knowledge, full of bliss and is eternal. However it is obvious that we are far from living by this true nature of ours. In order to feel fully blissful, full of knowledge and eternal, in simple words to just be ourselves, we need to be engaged in something that is very natural to us, which is to love the Lord. This might look alien to many because we have forgotten ourt real nature. To recover from this spiritual amnesia, we need to simply chant the names of the Lord: we may chant Krishna, Christ or Allah! They all refer to the same person. The mantra I chant is the Hare Krishna mahamantra: Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.. Try It!!! When we chant the names of the Lord, we will gradually but surely revive our loving relationship with the Lord. This is true religion. Any process that can help us revive our love for the Lord is true religion. Any present day so called 'religion' that does not help us revive this lost loving relationship is only a ritual or a practice for the sake of it. And to answer your qusetion, "CHARACTER IS BIGGER THEN CASTE AND HUMANITY IS GREATER THEN RELIGION".. character, caste, humanity and religion are all very harmonious with each other, if they are all understood in its real sense.

Peace!
Religion can help people establish a relationship with God and attain holiness. It should also perform acts of charity. "In the sight of God, our Father, pure and blameless religion lies in helping the orphans and widows in their need and keeping oneself from the world's corruption." - James 1,27
And yes, I agree with you. The well-being of people should be above religious interests.

Religion is the haunting fear that someone, somewhere may be happy coupled with the fanatical obsession of crushing that happiness.
