Shiba's are known to be pretty aloof (almost cat like) dogs. The good points are that they are pretty laid back, not big barkers, and not that big. But, the drawbacks for kids is that they tend to keep to themselves a lot more than other breeds, not be as tolerant and generally not be the "lets go in the back yard and run around like morons" kind of dogs that most kids like.

However...these are all just stereotypes. Not every shiba is going to act exactly the same way--and the way that you raise it will also affect its personality. So, if your 7-year old's temperament matches the typical shiba's temperament, then the 2 might be a good match. However, please consider going to your local shelter and adopting a dog instead of purchasing a dog from a pet store or puppy mill. There are so many dogs that need good homes and you will have the advantage of being able to adopt a little bit older dog that has already developed his/her personality and you will be able to determine if its a good match for your family. Anyway, just a suggestion. Good luck with your new dog--whatever he ends up being.

Personally, a shiba inu would not be my first choice for a 7 yr old girl because they can be very bold, aggressive with other dogs and possessive. In other words: dominant.

The average shiba is probably a bit much for the average 7 year old and they are NOT for first time dog owners.

Here's a good page on what they are like:

I guess it boils down to the kid, the dog and the breeder---finding one near you to lend you expertise and make sure you get a good pup is a MUST with this breed.

Which traits which drew you to the Shiba Inu? Perhaps if you listed the pros and cons of the breed on a piece of paper it would help you think about this.

Shiba Inu's can be very dominate dogs with a mind of their own. They are protective of their territory and they will test you. They also tend to have animal aggression issues. They can be alright family dogs BUT get one as a puppy and raise it. They are just one of those breeds you should really start fresh on. It makes it easier. But, if you are looking for something older, get one that has had previous exposure to children and doesn't feel threatened or startled by them when they are around. Obedience training with a breed like an Inu is important due to their dominate nature. Another important thing is socialization to other animals and people (especially kids) so they get used to them and don't want to try and eat them :) Hope this helps!

Shiba inus are too dominant for a 7 yr old girl . Why not a golden retriever ? Or a ****-zu ? These breeds are better suited for children as they are less likely to have any animal agression issues and yes do start with a puppy . Bring the puppy up with the girl and she will have a wonderfull friend for many years to come and you will be much happier with your decision. good luck to you.

The question is how much effort do you want to have in training it. Shiba's can be great dogs, but its been my experience that they are very high strung, hard to train breed. They tend to be one person oriented and standoffish or aggressive to others. I am a vet tech and have seen many, but I dont think I would recommend them for a child that young. Several months ago, my own sister called and said she wanted to get one, I told her several times that it was not a good idea (she works alot, and is not home much), but she went out anyway. Now she's paying for it, she's had to replace all the carpeting in her house (chewing), pay for surgery to remove that carpeting from her puppies belly, and now she's paying a bit of money for a private trainer to teach this puppy some manners. If your daughter is really set on this breed, go see a breeder and make her (and you) spend some time with some ADULT Shibas (all puppies are cute and hard to resist).

Your pals appear like ignorant pink- neck morons. Too undesirable for you. If I have been you and that i knew the only canines exchange into being overwhelmed for chewing on issues i could call the ASPCA, or SPCA as its called in some factors. They function on the comparable foundation as new child protection centers. You proceed to be nameless and that they are going to come look at the welfare of the canines.some years in the past a neighbor used to maintain her canines outdoors from solar up till solar down and this canines could bark non-end. all of the pals accrued mutually and signed a petition and gave it to the city and that they advised her she had to maintain her canines indoors as she exchange into in violation of the noise code ordinance. it is purely certainly one of the innovations obtainable to you. in case you have different pals who do not delight in the therapy that the countless animals are receiving, then perhaps you fairly do ought to call the ASPCA. feels like assorted the human beings on your community don't be attentive to a thank you to be a solid puppy proprietors.
