STANDARDIZATION.......ONE number for all TV picture tubes from all manufacturers.....
Sony's 36 inch TV may be a little bit different than RCA's, but by standardizing the measurement method you'll find RCA's 35.5 inch view screen and Sony's 36.5 inch view screen to BOTH be sold as 36 inch TV sets!

It's easier to remember a single number than two dimensions. Besides, you can derive the length and width by remembering that the standard TV screen aspect ratio is 4:3, the widescreen 16:9. And use a little algebra: a^2 + b^2 = c^2

Widescreen is 16 (wide) by 9 (tall).
That is the ratio of width and height.
Standard old tv is 4 (wide) by 3 (tall).
Now, if you KNOW the ratio of width and height, then a single number works for screen size.
A good conversion to know is that if you watch widescreen DVD on standard TV, it is about 80% of the size
so, if you have a 36 inch regular old tv, and watch a widescreen show, it is the same (about!) as a 28.8 inch diagonal Widescreen.
And visa versa watching standard tv on a widescreen.. you get about 80%.
On the former, you get black bands top and bottom, and the latter, bands on the sides.

I think it is a marketing thing...so people think they are getting a REALLY big TV instead of a normal sized one. Anything to make a sale.
