She will be a week going into heat... a week when she's 'ripe' and able to conceive... and a week going out. So, it all takes about 3 weeks.

about 21 days, from day 11-15 or there abouts will change to a straw coloured discharge and she will swell up, this is the time when she would accept a male, BEWARE. Then this will gradually turn back to normal over the following 5-7 days.

It will last about 21 days, she is most at risk of becoming pregnant ( if left with a male of course ) between days 10 to 18 but all dogs differ so be careful.

I don't know how long you have had this dog but I am relieved that you have finally decided to educate yourself about the canine reproductive system.
Perhaps you should have made some enquiries about this sort of thing way back when you decided to buy a b**ch pup?
By the way it is referred to as being 'in season' or 'on heat' not 'period'.

Bleeding can last for up to two weeks, but she is most receptive just after she finishes bleeding. She should be kept in and excercised in the garden for three weeks.
