For travel within the European Union, a British (EU) passport is OK right up until its expiry date. Thus, there should be no problem travelling on a passport between Spain and the UK (return journey) even if it's on its last day of validity.

Don't worry, you can travel on it right up to its date of expiry.

A little known fact, a passport is valid for 5 years after its expiry date as a form of photographic ID, and although some airlines willl query it, it is perfectly acceptable. I would of course advise renewing the document once it does expire however!

In this case you'll have no problem at all, it's not necessary to renew it for your trip to Spain.

it is normally advisable to have a few extra months on it, simply because you may end up staying longer due to unforeseen circumstances, for example a hospital stay. you wouldn't want the grief of sorting out a passport after something like that. even worse the airline could refuse to let you fly out there in the first place.
