Last night my cat brought in a live sparrow that my cat brought in! It was alive so we kept it in dark box overnight. This morning it was still alive but we don't know if it will die later of shock when we let it go!

The chances are, that if it survived the night, then it should survive being released.Normally a bird will die of shock with in a couple of hours of an attack.Make sure that it will be released in such a way that it will be able to have enough height to fly.Near a tree or a fence,so it will be able to have an easy take off.Of course, make sure there are no cats around.

Just a note - Sparrows are NOT vermin in the UK, their numbers have, over the last couple of years, been dwindling rapidly; they have already been put on the endangered list in the Netherlands and if they become any rarer in the UK that may well happen here too.

If the shock of being caught hasn't already killed the bird, the chances are it will be okay. Don't subject it to any more contact than absolutely necessary, and give it some seed and water in separate bowls. Keep the cat well away from it and pop the box (open) somewhere the sparrow can hop out into safety - a large fir tree or thick-branched bush would be ideal.

If it won't leave, the vet may be an option, but there is relatively little they can and will do for wild birds, and it may just traumatise it further - a better bet would be to take it (if you're anywhere near there, it's in Bucks) to St Tiggywinkle's hospital. They specialise in treating and releasing wild animals and birds.

Let us know how it goes!

Had this happen before!!!!!! Keep your cat in for now, put the sparrow outside somewhere quiet or sheltered in the garden or something & leave for a while. Go out to check if it has gone later & if it has then let your cat out.

Yikes!! That innocent looking sparrow is a harbinger of some very nasty viruses and diseases. If the creature is still alive....let it go and hope for the best. Be sure to clean and disinfect all areas that the sparrow had contact.

first of all, if the sparrow was petrified, it would be thousand of years old and hard as a rock. now that that is out of the way, if the bird cannot fly, it is going to die. give it back to the cat. let nature take its course. there is no reason to spend money on it by taking it to a vet.

Goodness sake, poor thing. I hope you have let it go now. If it was alive why didnt you let it go straight away! Better to die of shock in the wild, than cooped up in your box without food and water!

I suggest that you take the box outside and lay it on the ground with the lid off. Hopefully the bird will fly away.

PS keep the cat well out of the way!

The Cat is showing "loyalty" to you. The bird should be o.k. I hope. Leave the box out and see if it will fly away. If not then go to the vet with it or to a preserve if there is one by you. Good luck.

Does it seem well? If so then I would say let it go, if it hasnt died of shock by now then it will not.
If it still seems ill or injured, your best bet is to take it to the vet or to your nearest RSPCA / SSPCA shelter and they will tell you what to do with it. You could even phone them for advice.

Cut a small flap in the box, enough only for him to put his head through, and put a makeshift drinker that he can reach. put the box in your garage where he is safe and can see the water, he wont eat when he is frightened, keep all humans away, they will only frighten him more, if he is still alive after 2 days, release him in your garage or simular to see if he is well enough to fly, if not catch him quickly, return to box, introduce a litte water moistened bread and change every day until well enough
