I would save the flares until I HEARD something man made(helo,plane,snowmobile).

What kind of boat are you driving?
I never heard of anyone "firing" flares when stuck on a road.
Use highway flares, they work better for the purpose. Since they last for hours, you can set them up as soon as you get stuck. Other drivers will appreciate the warning, and one may stop.

As often as you like, for as long as you like, I guess. Me? I'd be on my cell, calling a tow truck, or hoofin' 'er to a pay phone, rather than playing with the flare gun. (Save the flares for a REAL emergency; like if someone is hurt real bad or somethin')

only when you here a definitive sound like a truck, or a helicopter, something like that if let off too many flares and no one comes you could be stuck there a long time before help does arrive.

once ever 20mins whilst you are still warm and find it all little bit fun. Every 10mins when panic starts to set in, and every 5 when you start to lose the use of you limbs due to the cold.
