They're both ridiculously flawed concepts driven by blind faith misplaced in a prehistoric belief that religion has any substance.

Completely different concepts - in the most literal sense of the word, Jihad means 'struggle' - so I would take this as struggle to be a better person & a better Muslim. I strive towards this every day of my life, e.g if I have a difficult journey into work, its my struggle to stop complaining and be grateful that at least I have a job and the ability to move about - i.e. try and be a better person about it etc. Muslims go through Jihad every day if you take it in this sense. Unfortunately the world at large only see 'Jihad' in relation to how its portrayed by suicide bombers (who, incidentally, are NOT martyrs) and not as most Muslims view Jihad - in the peaceful sense.
Martyrdom is only achieved when one is killed in the way of God - the way of God is definitely NOT achieved by killing hundreds of innocent people - you attack in the name of God only when you are being unjustly attacked or Islam is being attacked; also, your attack (in this case, defense) should be directed towards the perpetrators of the crime, not the public at large.

Jihad has nothing to do with bombing your self up though terrorists have done a good job of maligning its name by killing thousands of innocent people.
Jihad in Islam is "Fight Against the Self". The objective of Jihad is to fight the urge to sin whether it be stealing, adultery or any other sin ( most of them shared among religions).
When in public, Jihad also means answering people's queries about Islam, older folks stopping younger ones from engaging in sin, informing them on theology.
Bombing buildings or killing people has nothing to do with the reformation of the self, which is jihad in Islam.
Cheers.

I’d be very happy to help a Muslim towards martyrdom.
Just help me lift this bag of lime to the bathroom.
Now stretch you neck over the bath….that’s it…… don’t want to get blood on my floor…
….another one bits the dust. Du du du!

Neither.. why can't we all accept each other.. live and let live. I saw dispatches last night.. it scared me a little, seeing such extremists in our homeland.. If they don't like our ways, they shouldn't come here, simple as that.
Why can't they just isolate themselves from us, and leave us in peace?
