But then say Christianity is the largest religion in the world? If you take away those sects then Islam outnumbers the rest of Christianity.

Most of these answers are full of shyt! There is only one thing that qualifies someone to be a Christian. That you believe Jesus died for your sins and that on the third day he arose! Anything else one might believe does not matter. There are many Baptist and Methodist that are not Christian.

There are two Books you may be interested in that explain each and every major religion, cult or sect called: Larsen's Book of Cults by Larsen and World Religions Made Easy by Barbour Press.

The term "catholic", means universal teaching. In this sense the gospel of Jesus', virgin birth, life, death and resurrection and soon to return.

Why does anybody care about numbers of how many persons? Just to say there are more of us than You? We are bigger and that makes us right? That is wrong thinking, no matter who does it and that is not what Jesus taught. Matthew 7:13-14!
Please remember David and Goliath or the scripture stories about the small church within secular Rome, though many attempted to stop Christianity in world history, burn the Bible and ban it, it was never ever stopped in its message!

...Could this be the reason we still have so much flawed teaching and hatred in the world? Are people Christian in name only? See Revelation 3!

I don't know about the claim that Christianity is the largest religion in the world (and I doubt it is), but I do think that what makes someone a Christians is the belief in Jesus Christ, the reliance upon His sacrifice and Resurrection for salvation, and living one's life based on His teachings. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion about other religions (and obviously everyone feels THEIR religion is the correct one), but we should respect all religions regardless.

Good question

The differences in Christianity vs. Catholicism mainly stem from the organization of the churches.

Since Catholics turn to the pope as the "voice of god on earth" and often worship saints and relics, may consider it a violation of one of the ten commandments (Idolatry).

The Schism began with Martin Luther and his movement to break away from the Catholic church. most modern Christian churches at one time in the past had been break aways from the "mother church" (Catholicism).

Many "Christians" believe that since Catholics do not follow the tenants of god then they are not christian.

same goes for Mormons.

Catholics do have the same principals and basis as modern Christians so they are counted as Christians (generally speaking) but they are rejects by several sects.

There are some that believe only their interpretation of the Bible is true and correct. They say that Catholics are only interested in ritual and idolitry, not in worshiping God and they say mormons added to the Bible and can't be considered saved. I personally feel everyone has the right to believe in what they choose to believe.Religion should be a very private matter, between each individual and God.

You can be a catholic christian. There are differnt types of catholics. If they pray to Mary, then they have given her omnipresence, which makes her a god too. That fact alone would not make Jesus a non human on Earth. Sort of like Hercules. Mormons are a joke to me. They claim some man came named John or James came to america, and Jesus came to him and gave him more books, which are contained in the book of Mormon. If I CLAIMED the same thing couldI have MY own religion? He has no witnesses either! Just because a religion outnumbers another religion doesn't make it right. After all the suicide bombers, hate crimes, war and natural disasters, those numbers won't look so good. No disrespect intended, just my POV.

Some people have problems with certain parts of both catholicism and mormonism (in particular the latter - it is usually only mormons who consider themselves christian).

For instance, christianity generally teaches salvation by faith alone as a fundamental teaching. However, Catholicism contradicts this;

"If any one saith, that by faith alone the impious is justified; in such wise as to mean, that nothing else is required to co-operate in order to the obtaining the grace of Justification, and that it is not in any way necessary, that he be prepared and disposed by the movement of his own will; let him be anathema." (Canon 9, Council of Trent).

anathema means "polluted, detested or accursed".

More reasons why Catholics might not be considered christian can be found here: http://www.jesus-is-lord.com/cath.htm

Mormons consider themselves the only true christians, saying other denominations were "all wrong ... all their creeds were an admonition in his sight, and that those professors [Christians] were all corrupt" (Pearl of Great Price, Joseph Smith, 2:18-19).

They claim the leader, Joseph Smith saw God, yet according to the bible "Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father." (John 6:46)

Mormons also claim humans can become gods, which is a bit difficult to reconcile with the traditional christian ideas of monotheism and the trinity.

And finally, Joseph Smith's account to decipher the new part of the scriptures includes occult methods, which is against the bible
------------------
Note that both Catholicism and Mormonism claim to be christian, and these surveys generally include people with the religion they consider themselves to be. So 2.1 billion people may consider themselves Christian, although not everyone will agree that they all are.

For instance

"The adherent counts presented in the list above are current estimates of the number of people who have at least a minimal level of SELF-IDENTIFICATION as adherents of the religion" (emphasis added)

The Catholic Church was founded personally by Jesus Christ and has always been, and always will be Christian.

The Mormons were founded by Joseph Smith, and teach some doctrines that are not to be found in mainstream Christianity, and others that are completely at odds with it.

The "Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints" might better be called "The Church of Another Christ".
