A GP cannot prescribe a placebo to his / her patients.
The only way you can ever be given a placebo without knowing is if you are taking part in clinical trails (and you'd know if you were taking part). When involved in a clinical trial, subjects are made aware of all risks etc and are required to give full consent. However, the subject must not know whether their medication is "real" or not as the knowledge may influence the results.

Check the prescription and google the name of the drug and see what you can find?
Does the doctor have a reason to give you a placebo?
