This was on the Dog whisperer the other day. If he is only barking at men, it could be that he considers you his "lady" and is therefore telling all other men that fact and protecting his property.

Well if you're into behavioral conditioning from a "positive dog training" stance, I'd say your best bet is to find a male friend or someone that causes him to bark come over. Someone preferably who is very patient and pretty cool with dogs. Both of you completely ignore the dog while he barks. If you tell him to stop or pet him, he'll get the impression that barking = attention. If you ignore him, he'll eventually quit. At that point, reward him with a treat, or pet him or play with him. If he starts to get excited and bark again, completely ignore him. This will take awhile, especially if he's used to someone yelling "STOP IT" or hitting him when he's loud. But be patient and keep reinforcing that he'll get attention once he calms down.
Also remember that dogs can be territorial, and if it's a male he may be protecting you from other males. Ensure that the males are nice to him and that your dog makes the association that they are friends.
No guarantees, as sometimes the dog will identify with each male separately and still bark at strangers, especially if they give him attention for it (negative or positive), but it's worth a shot.

It may be the breed of dog that causes him t o bark. There are certain breeds, such a chawawa''s that bark continually and drives me crazy. Channel 13 News in Grand Rapids, MI had a segment on today about a Russian man who trains dogs and can break him in just a few minutes. He does have a dvd out that you can buy. Get on goggle and search for channel 13 news, actually, it is a talk show attached kind of to the news only not. Anyway, go to Channel 13 news in Grand Rapids, MI and you should be able to find the segment on that site.

wait until he calms down and stops barking to give any attention. if he getting excited tell the man not to give attention until he calms down. if it's aggressive barking at men, tell him no and to sit. if he doesn't know sit. well start there. take him to a training class. this will build your dog's confidence and teach him you are to be respected and listened to. it will also help the two of your bond better. but your best way is to provide no attention when he's excitidly barking. tell him to sit, and once he does and becomes calm then he can get attention. he will learn barking is not a proper response to stimulation. good luck.
