Use crystal beads and attach them using short pins to make designs. It can turn out looking very elegant with some sparkle. (My friend did that with her Unity candle) Just make sure you only push the pin in ONCE and don't wiggle it. Otherwise the pinholes will get too big and pins will fall out. Good luck!

communion candles can be loads of fun to dress up. And again this is according to your religious preferences and beliefs so don't shoot down the messenger.
If you are:
Catholic use a white candle wrap it with a rosery
Wiccan use a white or purple candle, carve it with the appropriate diety symbol and dress it with the appropriate oils and then pray
Spiritual use a white or purple candle
Most spiriual candles are very plain sorry unless your relgion allows for decoration then the sky is the limit on it. I'm wiccan so I dress all my spiritual candles with the fruits of the appropriate season, always live flowers and fruits nothing dead or picked, i use small pots of the flowers to place around the candles. When the season is over, I simply replant the plants and sit them in a window sil. Just a suggestion

If you go to a party supply store, just look at what they have for communions you can glue them onto the candle.(Crosses, a chalice, etc) You could also get a angel tack pin remove the back, and stick the pin part into the candle.
I don't know how wide you candle is, but you can get a nice gold candle holder and place the candle in it, and add some frilled lace around it.Secured with glue.

Use some gold ribbon with wire in it at the base. Try crimping it and see how it looks best. Then buy one small silk flower and place it in the ribbon. Hot glue it in if needed.
Then do like the other lady said and carve a cross up the side of the candle. In fact, do this part first! And maybe put some gold paint pen in the cross.

if you dont have a candle yet, communion candle during my communion days was w/ votive (glass w/ 4" candle in it).
for VOTIVE CANDLES- options:
1. you can decorate it w/ wires with beads (plastic, crystals, pearls or even pebbles), it's like making an accessory (necklace). make a pattern around and put some tiny ribbons in between. or better yet try using a necklace u wish to re-use for that if u dont have the materials.
2. use fresh flowers or leaves like making a wreath.
3. crochet, like making a tumbler casing. use your imagination w/ the color 7 patterns.
4. hand paint it w/ any image or pattern appropriate for the occasion (flowers, angels, etc.), use glitters (glue).
God bless!

for a large pillar candle that won't be burnt down add nature... clipped floral blooms... acorns, dried grasses, leaves..push a straight pin thru decorations into candle... run ribbon around around and secure with pins or just surround the base of the candle with real or silk foliage

uncomplicated is appropriate. Use a great ribbon on your colour with a greater narrow ribbon on your accessory colour around the middle candle. Or, have a hoop of sparkling vegetation around the backside of the candle. do not bypass overboard, simplicity is alluring! sturdy success!
