I am a self-injurer, and I've been one for years. It can be an addiction, so watch how much your doing it. Be careful of where, how, how deep and be sure to clean your wounds. I'm only 18, I've been cutting for about 7 years now, take it from someone that understands, it can be a problem but its a way of coping with problems. I started after I found out that it would help me with my feelings about my abuse that I had suffered for years, so please don't think your alone. You may email me if you wish, I am always willing to talk and help people out. Blessings and best of luck to you.

becareful of what you rea or listen to... icluing my own post
I know what you mean, there'll be many who have no clue what your'e thinking, an what your'e going through... but sometimes, pain from an event, situation, can manifest itself as a real pain, something that haunts you all the time. It's chronic like a headache, but as debilatating as a missing lung, and makes everything feel wrong, like a iseased kidney.
Cutting yourself releases endorphins that help keep the pain away... for a little while at least. It's a real PHYSICAL addiction, I know, I've been there myself.
I've been there, wanting to hurt myself more and more just so my mind and body can focus on a new pain.
But please, don't do it, you can stop it. Don't let it escalate. You think cutting is an addiction? Happiness is the real addiction, without, people subsitute for it and wind up exhuasted, alone, and old. You have to find your own personal happiness, don't let some failures stop you, and don't depend on any one thing for your happiness and definition of who you are.
I know it's ******* vague, and but, you need to know yourself... get out more and meet more people. If you can't, concentrate on a couple of side jobs to raise your confience, before presenting yourself for a real job. Dive into something, even volunteer work can make you feel better. You may be thinkign that oyu heard this before, or that I'm some loon trying you get you off your ***, but, really, I do care about what happens to you, and I know nobody wants you to break your wrist, even you, deep inside.

I used to cut among other things. It is a problem because it becomes a cycle and escalates many times. What used to work doesn't any more and you have to do worse. I understand this kind of pain, this kind of self-punishment that temporally makes you feel better, but it is a destructive impulse that you need to fight. You can fight the urge by snapping rubber band on your wrist< (my favorite) or holding ice cubes in your hand or a cold shower. But you need to get help for the underlying problem. you are severly depressed. there is help. talk to your doctor about your situation, there are programs to get you the meds if you need them. by the way depression is a mood disorder and does not mean you are psychotic. Psychosis normally denotes dellutions or hallucinations.

Sounds like you need to get some help fast. Please do not break your wrist. I can understand being in that much emotional pain and how physical pain can make it feel better. Cutting can become very addictive. It did for me, but I did it for over 15 years. You don't need medication to get over cutting, although it probably would help. Would you be able to see a therapist/counselor? Some county places have free groups or pay on a sliding scale to what you can afford. Please also check out http://www.myspace.com/selfinjuryhope.

If you find you cant feel better unless you cut your self, then yes you are addicted.
Its really good that you are admitting it so early on, because that is the first step to recovery.
I suggest you see a professional asap
Because the depression can be fixed eventually, but the scars last forever

It can be an addiction and it is to cover up the pain you feel inside. That is the main reason people cut themselves. You need to get help with it. You are causing yourself pain and that in itself isn't good. There are places you can get your medication paid for. Your doctor may know of a way. He may also be able to give you samples for a while. Please just seek help because it isn't healthy. Good luck in all you do.

To answer your question bluntly: Yes you have a serious problem, you should seek help (there must be voluntary services in your area that provide counselling or support for those who self harm, look on internet), No it wont blow over, no you aren't psychotic.
Check out the website link below for some help, its a UK website so might not be totally relevant.

It's a little worrying but not as uncommon as you may think. Try getting some counciling for depression and try to keep focussed on other things. I did the same when I was in my early 20's but it passed for me after a few months.
