I am 18 and will be moving out come this fall to go to college. I am only moving an hour away so it will be easy for me to take the train home on weekends, but I am so incredibly torn as far as weekdays for him. My sister and I are both away at college and it is only my dad who will live at home on weekdays. He works very long hours and I don't want him to be alone all day every day.

Any ideas for recreation/fun for the dog while we are away? What can I do to make him less lonely after I move out?

have you checked into a "dog sitter" someone to come let the guy outside and walk him durring the day, when no one is home? Either that, or take him to doggy day care durring the week. Im not kidding. I used to do both with my dogs. They loved it. Maybe a neighbor or friend would be willing to visit him durring the day and walk him (or a neighbor kid would do it for cheap after school).

Sleep with some stuffies and leave them about the house. Will remind him of you. Get your pup a Kong. Put some peanut butter inside or dog treats. He will lick it out and toss it around for hours. Leave the TV or radio on for company. If you have an answering machine. Give it a call between classes. hearing your voice will help settle the little feller too. When you come home, Do make a big deal. I am 50 years old and When I come home, we wrestle and play and roll around, right now even in the snow. It is a blast... Tell him how much you love him and miss him... Words mean a lot to animals too.

contact your local humane society or your vet. often they will have a list or someone on staff that does such a thing. if you're 18 do you know someone who's still going to be around your home that could help your dad and dog out? someone you would trust? good luck.

If it's possible you might consider finding a another pet compatible with your dog.
