This is probably the stupidest question I hear about not believing. If god is the only reason to act "moral" you believers are f*cked up. Since the world is predominatly full of "believers" it is obvious that it just is not working.

I base morality on degree of harm. I wish not to harm anyone emotionally, physically materialy, monetarily, or mentally and this includes myself. When I lye or am dishonest I harm myself.. Without integrity we have nothing. It is just freakin common sense. Do you need a spirit in the sky to tell you what common sense should tell you? I find that to be weak minded and sad.

I am assuming that you are referring to the Christian god. I wonder how one might haved asked this question prior to the arrival of Christianty.
Like I tell my son..."You should be good for the sake of being good. If you know that what you are doing is wrong, then don't do it."
Deep inside you know if your actions are right or wrong, moral or immoral. With a liitle introspection you should be able to see that being immoral is bad for the person as a whole and affects not only ones immediate surroundings but, in the big picture, the whole of society.

Without God all morality is relative. Without God you lose all basis for saying that one action is more or less moral than another. If you do assert that certain things are more or less moral than others than you're invoking a moral law. But without some objective moral standard by which to guage morality, there is no basis for making a moral claim.

The roots of morality: why are we good?

In chapter 6 of "The God Delusion" Dawkins turns his attention to the subject of morality, arguing that we do not need religion in order to be good. Instead, he maintains that our morality has a Darwinian explanation: altruistic genes have been selected through the process of our evolution, and we possess a natural empathy.

For the same reason that people who believe in God act immoral.
The two systems, what we believe in and how we act are not intertwined.
They are totally separate.
I can be a satan worshiper and live a wholesome life of doing no wrong to my fellow man.
You can be a person who believes in God and be a serial murderer or rapist.

The two do not connect.

religion is not the only explanation for morality. People act in a certain way so that we can all get along more or less. Have you ever been treated poorly? I would never want others to be treated the way that I have been treated by some people.

Believing in god or being religious doesn't necessarily mean you're going to be moral. I'm able to know right from wrong without being told from a book. Many people who are religious have turned to that because they have done something wrong in the first place and need something to guide them.

Morals and religion are mutually exclusive.

Religion, for some people, tells you "who to be" and how to act.

For people without religion, we base our ethics and morals on how we feel we should treat our fellow man.

Its easy when you have a book outline 10 rules for you.

Its harder when you have to make the right decision only because YOU KNOW its the right decision.

believing in god and acting moral are connected and at the same they are not. god gives you guildlines on how to be moral. but for people who do not belive in god, such as myself, it is more a matter of respect. i will not steal because i respect the people around me. not believing in god does not mean that i have no values.

With or without God people have love.
With or without God people have happiness.
With or without God people have compassion.
With or without God people have empathy.
With or without God people have understanding.
With or without God people have people.

My brother is an athiest and I am short of a fanatical occultist. We share many basic principles in the way we treat people and we have many differences. The reason my brother acts moral and ethical is becuase he enjoys seeing people happy. This is the same reason I behave morally and ethically. Just becuase I believe in a God does not sway my reasons for being a good man.

You will find many believers in God do not use God as their soul reason for being good people. You will also find that its usually not on the top of the list either. People realize followers of God or not that the future of kindness and joy depends completely on our ability to teach it to the next generations. We do this not for ourselves but for those we love. If we make the world a better place by being nice then not only our friends benifit, but the friends of friends and so on. By being good moral people we can live in happiness and joy. Things that are stressful like grocery shopping or cleaning house can be a lot more fun or take less time if our family and friends help us out of the goodness of their hearts.

I depend on this completely. If I had nobody to love I would parish without a doubt. If nobody loved me I could not survive this world alone. Without the love and effection of my family and friends I have no reason to live. God gave them to me so I could be happy and love. Without them I would not know how. My only hope is that I was given to my friends by God as well, and that I prove myself an equal to such beautiful people.

Morality is based on the desire of people to be happy and joyful. I know many athiest and they choose a moral life becuase like me, they only hope to be as loving and beautiful people as their friends are.

Hails to the truth,
Silence
