Passport........nobody since 9/11 should travel without a passport.
I know that people say you only need a drivers licence or birth certificate. Try telling that to the customs guy from hell.
10 years ago, as a Canadian who had traveled hundreds of times to the US. I was in a rush and couldnt find my passport, so I used my drivers license. That held me in US customs at Toronto airport for 2 hours and a very stern warning to no try it again. That was way before 9/11.
No Visa is required

Under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI)
The proposed implementation timeline has two phases:
* Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.
* As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

No. All you need is some identification. You will need your passport to get back into the United States. If you go by air you'll need a passport to get back into the USA. In 2008 if you drive, fly or float to Canada you will need your passport. So take your passport and you'll be fine.

NOW YES. I was watching the news and now the law is for the homeland security to have a passport to travel to Canada and Mexico, before you didn't need it, now is the law. Go and check the state department. Good luck!

I believe now you must have a valid passport. Under the old rules it was pretty easy to go back and forth.
