Just to add to what has already been said:
social worker do intake and assessment;
(they usually, not alrwys work for Government programs and record information and assess someone to see if they would be good candidates for specific programs).
They do case coordination;
this consists of talking with clients and helping them resolve any problems that they may have.
They refer other programs or people is needed.
They try and find resources for people, if they need something that they can't find. Now, of course, I am not talking about "finding a collector's item." I am talking about child care, a job, money to pay bills, housing, health care, connections with a support group, etc.
Some social workers lead support groups and other small groups.
There may be a group concerned with alcoholic parents or cancer patients, or joblessness.
If you are a Masters level social worker, you can do some counseloing and therapy. You can also advocate on the state and federal level to get some laws changed or enacted that might help the community.
Social workers also help in the area of community development. They might try and get a program started that would help Spanish speaking individuals learn English. Or they might advocate for a homeless shelter in their area, after noticing that there are quite a few homelses people on the street.
They can also be a personal advocate for someone who needs an advocate.
Many people just know of social workers, as they pertain to Child Protection Services. They know of social workers taking children away from their families. But, social workers also try and reunite families. They can also work in schools: to help counsel or develop school social programs. There are also some social workers who work in companies: helping workers with their problems. They solve disputes on the job and help employers find resources, also. If you are a Masters level, you can go into private theraputic practice and counsel individuals, families with many different problems. Doctorate level social workers usually teach. Social workers are bound to keep their own views separate from the code of ethics, if they clash. But, as in all professions, some find this difficult.

A wide range of areas

With Older people and people with disabilities often they assess needs and arrange care packages to help them maintain independence. In mental health often they are part of a team of social workers, community psychiatric nurses and psychiatrists etc who support people with mental health problems and if they are approved social workers assess whether someone should be admitted to hospital under the mental health act. With children and families they might be involved in adoption work or child protection work. A whole range of other areas but these are just a few. In all of these areas the key to good social work is good listening skills and the ability to understand people's needs rather than imposing their own values and opinions on people

A social worker is trained in social sciences. Their work entails assisting with adoptions, fostering of children and basic counseling. They also assist impoverished families and provide basic life skills.

The main job of a social worker is to guide people to the resources they need to get along in life. They link people who need help to the programs they can help them, provide guidence and counsel. They also take an "advocate" stance in the society, trying to create and maintain programs that will help people.

Social workers have many varied roles, but mainly their role is to asess vulnerable people and see if there's any way the state can help them. They help old people get nursing home placements, check kids aren't being abused and the houses they live in meet certain criteria eg bed to sleep on, food to eat.... Try and provide support and help with paperwork to house homeless people etc etc etc.
