Invented the airplane...alot of people "invented "the airplane, it is just that the Write bros are credited with the first heavier-than-air, machine powered flight in the world. Not the Inventors of the airplane. So to answere your question....Neither!

The Wright Brothers. Dumont did build an airship, which relies on gas properties to attain flight, but that is not an airplane. The Wrights flew their airplane before Dumont flew an airplane of his own creation, the Wright's first flights were not public, whereas Dumont's first airplane flight was.

Wright are creditet of the first heavier than air flight, but it's not true....in fact some other pioneers managed to fly before..
One of the most important is Gustave Weisskopf, a German migrant to USA, in fact he is also known as Whitehead. He flied an engined airplane some years before (1901), and flied for a longer distance, about 1,5 miles, while the first flight of Wright's was only 852 feet long.
In 1996 a replica of the No.21 was built, and flied succesfully, proving that Weisskopf tecnology was good enough to permit flight and control.

I think George Cayley can take part of the credit!!
A thank you to the person who rated my answer with a thumbs down. However you cut it dude, George Cayley has a clear cut claim to being one of the 1st people to successfully achieve heavier than air flight, beating the Wright Brothers and Herr Weisskopf by a goodly number of decades!!!
