Well I've only been to Maui in Hawaii, and yes, it is pretty expensive. You can cut some costs, by eating in smaller, local restaurants, and staying in a non-resort hotel. It'll still run you about $100 a night, and you may find cheaper, but depending on how long you stay, and how many activities/shopping you're planning on doing, I'd carry about $200/day (food, hotel, any shoppping/sightseeing/souvenirs, etc) I'd advise booking hotel and rental cars online, we saved a bunch of money that way, especially if you do a whole package, flight, hotel, and rental.
California can get pricey too, depending on where you go, and what you're planning to do and see. I don't know much about that area, but again, go online, travelocity.com, priceline.com, cheaptickets.com, all great sites, and could probably help put together a great vacation package.
My husband is from Canada, and his sister lives in Toronto, so I'm a little more familiar. If you love night life, Toronto is a great place for dining, clubs, and all that. Be sure to change your money away from the airports, because they usually don't have great rates. If you're visiting a friend, you'll save a lot, so you can carry less cash, I'd say about $50/day, just to get you around, go out to eat and clubbing a couple of times.
Hope this helped. Good luck!

Hawaii is pretty pricey, I would say about $150 a night although I am not 100% positive. Also allow more for food if you plan to stay in any major tourist areas. If you hit up some of the local eateries you can eat more cheaply. L&L BBQ is one of my favorites, a mini plate will fill you up and you can taste many of the island favorites. have fun!
