the short and most simple answer to your question is that if you buy any car that was made in America, no matter what the brand, it counts towards our GDP and in essence, helps our economy. buying a GM or Ford car yes helps strengthen the domestic auto industry... Chrysler too is still considered domestic though being owned by Daimler does make it not entirely American... again, buying a Benz that was built here helps our economy, and does help Chrysler too... The subsidiaries you mentioned such as volvo, saab, etc are either wholey or partially owned by American companies (which I'm sure you know) and are involved with profit sharing with the domestic firms... So again, the simple answer is yes, this does help the domestic auto makers But like I said, there's a difference between helping our economy and helping domestic auto makers... i.e. anything that is made here and bought here counts towards our GDP not to mention the jobs it creates etc etc p.s. its a myth that American cars are of poorer quality than say Japanese cars... this was true like 40 years ago when the American car makers had an oligopoly and didnt need to worry about quality cause there was no competition... imports changed all that... today pretty much any car, American, Japanese, German, or Korean are theoretically of comprable quality... you just get what you pay for...

Ford KA approx 1000 klms per tank and are very cheap but tiny.
Peugeot 206 approx 750 klms per tank around town (can pick up a 2000 /1 model up for $12,000 at auction on the right day). Excellent car I have one also quite small not good if you are tall.
Toyota Echo approx 700 klms per tank probably 2000 model for $10,000.
These are hatches I just realised sorry.

Toyota Camry is probably your best bet - locally assembled so parts are cheaper and they're very reliable. Avoid the rebadged Holden Vectra (actually a european Opel) as theyre a bit unreliable and very expensive to fix. Other Japanese makes are fairly good but Toyota is the best of them.
