i already saw the army head shrinks before i got out. like a few of you said so far unless you've experienced it it's hard to understand. sometimes it gets so bad i hear a backfire from a car and hit the ground and look up and people staring at me giving me strange looks. already happened once about 3 months ago. and for that 1 asshole that said if i was a vet already! 1/18/88-1-17-2003. with one 4 year break in service I seen more action than he wishes he had. desert storm, kosovo/bosnia,afghanistan. every male in my family served since WW2 starting with my grandfather. My older brother just retired this year and his son leaves for basic/AIT in 2 weeks at Fort Leonard wood,MO

I have found that the VA outreach clinics do a better job helping with PTSD than the regular hospitals. The VFW is a hit or miss deal depending on the quality of your local post but since you get the first year membership for free it is worth a shot.
Below is a link to a book that really helped me understand what was going on with my PTSD.

No one here will understand your pain. One doesn't understand the pains of war until they've experienced it, and it's not the same talking to someone who has never been in war and seen the insanity. A psychiatrist can't help you and neither can a doctor. You need to talk to some veterans from the military or contact your branch of service and see if you can get some referrals. I really wish I could help you, but I've never really experienced it myself. I just know what you can do to help yourself, I've known people in the same position and what they have done. I would suggest joining a military veterans forum and seeing if there is a local place where you can hang out and chat. Anyway man, good luck and thank you for your service.

Go to the VFW! those are the only people who will understand. I went but didnt like it anymore after a while. I just learned to put it all behind me.But it does help. Talking about it with actual people who have been there and done that is the best remedy. Not like here where people say , well, I havent experianced it but...... Next time ask for War vets to answer only. The VFW is a really good place for Vets. I support it 100%. The one thing I hate the most is people who have no idea what its like to be talking about it, or when they ask you stupid questions like war is supposed to be cool or something. Dont take any meds cause your body will become dependant to them.

Your local VA hospital should have a PTSD program. I've found them very helpful. They should have a grief counselor and discussion groups available. I know mine have been very helpful. They also gave me some medication. Ambien has worked wonders.

Contact the VA. Since Cheney and Dubya are war veterans, they feel your pain. That's why they make sure the VA is fully funded with the best tools and personnel in the business. Plus, no waiting!

Your local hospital will know. You should get a punching bag and punch it an hour a day for a year straight. You are suppressing painful memories of your expeience. It will work, but only if you do it an HOUR a day, every day, for a year straight. Don't punch hard, just lightly, I am serious.

Go to your nearest VA hospital. They have lots of support groups and workshops for this kind of thing. They can probably refer you to get the help you need also.
