I think that there is a lot of confusion about mental illness in general and this disorder really gets a bad rap. I am sorry, but if you have bipolar, with or without meds you know right and wrong. If you are terribly depressed then you may not be able to care about yourself, let alone anyone else.....but basically, folks are individuals who are either good, bad-self centered or not. I think at times folks use the illness as a crutch or excuse, like I am not taking responsibility for this it is my illness. The illness is real. It can be very bad. You can literally lose touch with reality, but at those times everyone knows you have lost touch. If this person functions in a pretty normal fashion in other ways, then it may be that she is just self centered.
The folks I know who are bipolar generally tend to be a lot more sensitive to other peoples moods and feelings than the average bear, but many folks with borderline personality disorder call themselves bipolar and they are a whole other ball game. Generally much sicker and with totally different symptoms. Sorry, but this hit a nerve as bipolar is portrayed everywhere and on tv in such an unrealistic way. You can hold very responsible jobs, be active in the community, run a charity and raise children all at the same time and have bipolar through it all......

My friend's mom is Bi-Polar, and she takes her meds etc. But she doesn't know that she's doing anything wrong when she is, and she just thinks that everyone else is in the wrong. So this person you're referring to probably just has a hard time assigning blame and attention where it should go. bi-polar disorder is both extremes. people have good days or bad days. they seem to be really up or really down. The medication supresses really rash outbursts etc. so their reasoning and reactions I think are limited.
so I would say yes, it is a symptom of the disorder. Hope that helped a little...

It can be a symptom of the manic phase of the Bi-Polar Disorder.
Bi-Polar simply means people with the disorder swing very easily between mania (excitement, activity, elation) and depression without much warning. To people who don't understand the disorder, it can seem as though these people just don't care about anyone or anything else. That's not the case, they have simply lost the ability to communicate it, at least temporarily.
If you are in a position of trust with this woman, I would encourage her to see her doctor and discuss her medication, because it sounds as though she is in a mania phase, which she shouldn't swing into if her meds are working properly.

I do not belive this is onlly a Bipolar trait. I know alot of people ho are pretty much slef centered but only a few of them are actually DX'ed with bipolar. I am bipolar and I do not think i am like that. But I do know few people who will do anything even steal their parteners pain medication and then call the police on this person self. I believe that alot of people are just plain and simple jerks but they use having a disease as their cover so they on't have to own up to what kind of person they let them selves be. The person you are asking about is just not a good person with or with out the DX'ed.
