I feel really sorry for them, but usually if they are bashing the Church then they are too far gone for a quick healing. I try to nudge them into becoming educated about whatever it is that's bothering them and pray for them. If they are just bitter then I only do that for so long before I just let them work it out or reject it on their own. It's really upsetting to hear people bashing the Church without being educated about it, but frankly, we hear it all the time from such people. :(

Peace!
I have been involved in Church activities as a lay person since 1997 so I think I can make suggestions to solve some of our pressing problems.
1. The Church is too slow in addressing problems. The scandals could have been nipped in the bud if they were addressed immediately. Those of us who are very close to the clergy knew this thing was going on. Our bishops knew about it but they kept silent, some even tried to cover up for priests who should have been defrocked. Vatican II reforms must be implemented immediately; otherwise, we will continue to lose the faithful to other religions.
2. If some Catholics bash their own faith, we only have ourselves to blame. I would say, only 1 in 10 would stand up for their faith because they took the trouble of finding out why they should be Catholic or they got good Catechetical instruction. Obviously, we have to empower the laity. We cannot depend on the clergy and the religous to address this problem. It is simply too big for them to handle. We have to remove the obstacles which make it difficult for a parishioner to get involved in the life and mission of his parish.
3. The Church must be light to the world. The world must look up up to the Church for its moral leadership. How can we be that if we continue to have scandals in the Church?
4. Lastly, we must go back to our beginnings. The early Church grew by leaps and bounds because people perceived them to be a community of love.

I know my doctrine and my history. It took the Vatican how many years to pardon Galileo???? I do not agree with the Catholic Church on many issues up to and including women's health. The Church still believes, at its heart, that sex is for reproduction only. That Viagra is OK, but birth control is bad. I also believe that The Church has documents that would change our look on Christ forever that they refuse to make public.

I was a Catholic 16 years, so I qualify...
It is a very unbiblical corrupted system. Praying to saints and Mary, not encouraged to carry or read a Bible, calling a preist father, confession, etc...all opposite of the Bible. Been blessed since I left.
