Do you think breeders should also focus on coming up with a new breed that has a healthy mix of genes from diff breeds, and that is bred to be, say.... very fast, strong, intelligent, physically beautiful, great attitude, superior sense of smell, sight (like sight hounds), etc.?

Please don't suggest one particular breed. They are all awesome and have diff strengths and weekneses, but I was wondering if anyone has heard about an "all-around" best of the best type dog. This one hopefully would not have the problems associated with many generations of inbreeding and linebreeding beacause it's genes would be a better mix.

I don't know, just a thought. And, thanks, in advance for your input.

That is exactly what Herr Dobermann set out to do. and he accomplished his desire, producing what we know as the Doberman. However, after just a century of breeding Dobes, they have just as many genetic problems as any other breed, and even more than most...
So, it only works for a little while. Soon, too much inbreeding takes place, trying to capture all of the best qualities, and produce a duplicate of the best dogs, and the breed goes down hill. Yep, we would do it to any breed. or new breed.
by the way, to get a breed recognized as a new breed takes about 40 years, if all goes perfectly....Registries require at least 21 breeders in as many states, and all dogs produced fitting the breed standard that your club has written. for,( I think it is), seven generations.
The most recent example breed is the cockapoos..Breeders are committed to establishing it as a breed, and are working toward meeting the AKC guidelines. It has been a long struggle for them.> http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/cockerpoo.htm

the Kyi-leo is another one struggling for AKC acceptance, and the breeder that I interviewed about the process> http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/kyileo.htm

the Texas State dog, the Blue Lacy, was develpoped from the same vision, as was the Catahoula, in all its forms. These were supposed to be the combinations of the best of the best, so that they were the only dog needed for any kind of work.

As a breeder, I have thought about the same thing now and then. But the akc will not give pedigrees to mixed dogs. There are dogs that have been around for thousands of years that have been only recognized within the last 18 years. So, they aren't necessarily interested in being a progressive organization in regard to new breeds.
Plus, you'd have a million breeders fighting over which one is the best, once they did it. It's bad enough as it is now! lol

But designer mixes are being bred by some breeders that are filling a niche that some people are looking for, like golden doodles, puggles, and others. That doesn't make them a better dog though, just different.

Thanks for posting a thoughtful question!

Most dogs were bred for a specific task, like hunting or sheep herding or as pampered pooches to the wealthy so they were thus bred with specific characteristics in mind. Furthermore it really depends on what you think is a perfect dog. Some people would want a large outdoors active dog. Another would want something small to carry around. As such a 'perfect' dog breed is theoretically impossible. It all depends on what the 'perfect' breed of dog is for you.

Are you thinking of the new Designer Dogs, such as the Labradoodle? The AKC won't recognize these types of dogs, so people who show, or need certification for breeding tend to pass upon them.
