i personally would go with mac(unix) or linux as they seem to have the most in favor of them at least for the near future. and i do so dislike problems , especially with bugs.

Depends on what you are trying to do with your computer. I am a "If it ain't broke don't fix it" guy so you may want to look at staying with your old system. I have been running redhat Linux 8 for about 6 years now and it looks like it has another 6 in it.
Fedora Core 6 is now out (http://fedora.redhat.com). It is a free OS that is in the Redhat Linux line of products and for everything except playing directx based games like Warcraft it should suffice. You can use a windows emulator to play those games but it is not trivial to install and configure.
Changing os's will make you a complete novice. So give something a shot for a few weeks and see if you like it then you will get better with time.
A hint of trivia Yahoo uses the Free BSD OS (http://www.freebsd.org) and it is working quite well for what they are doing.
Hope that helped

Tried them all? The Mac comes with the hardware. Closed source. What is Steve Jobs hiding?
Already got PCs? Grab http://pclinuxos.com
The BSA can't fine you $150,000 for running Linux on a PC!
Linux is so much like Mac, which also runs Xwindows
But, the source code is FREE for GNU/Linux and all apps.
I like the 20 Xwindows desktops, with up to 200 open windows in each, that GNU/Linux provides in a concurrent multi-processing environment. 4,000 things running at the same time is quite a feat!
Comes with 5500 FREE games, programs, applications.
http://pclinuxos.com
Immune to the "114,000 Microsoft Virus Definitions" and has none of the flaws, nor DLL hell. True multi-processor concurrent multi-processing!

I will say Vista, even though I prefer XP. And yes, Mac's popularity is increasing with geometrical progression, so it will probably start biting Windows' toes. You should also keep an eye on Ubuntu, an open-source and free-for-all Operating System provided by Linux.

Now, why pay for a bug-ridden software when you can treat yourself with a product that is permanently maintained and enhanced by thousands of bright professionals whose priority is quality instead of marketing, and reasonably priced?
Personally, I dislike XP although I have to use it professionally, I feel comfortable with MacOS, but my long-term pick is and probably will be Linux in one distribution or another.

I'd try back with Vista in a year once they get all the kinks out of it. I'd stick with XP until then.

Well, I use GNU/Linux simply because I like the freedom it gives me where I tell my computer what to do, not my computer telling me what to do. Mandriva is a good choice.
http://www.mandriva.com/en/download
Its a graphical isntall and a trained monkey could both install and use it.
