Here are some quotes from his book which might give you some insight.
On why he likes to perform magic:
"Magic allows people to recapture their childlike wonder and strip away their defenses. Magic makes people venerable. That's when they're the most beautiful, because they're no longer hiding and no longer afraid"
What he wanted to do with his first show was to show the reactions of people to his magic...."basically exposing the beautiful side of humanity-- capturing those pure moments of awe, the innocent moments when people drop their masks and stop critiquing themselves or obsessing on their everyday problems."

On why he does his endurance challenges, he says he is trying to do something that...."presents a real challenge to be overcome. In a way it's my attempt to reach for an absolute morality. I feel the most honest and pure when I do challenges, because at those times I'm living minimally--freed of all the things that we're fooled into believing we need."
When he was on the pole for 35 hours in 2002 he said;" I want to inspire people to challenge their own fears, angers and prejudices, so they can go out and face whatever they are afraid of in life".

I have always admired David Blaine. I hope you can see why.

David Blaine is talented in what he does.
So is Keith Barry.....and of course, David Copperfield.
And, also the Mondo Magic guys, great !!!
Freaky, yeah, but they are great professionals and everywhere they go, people will just go WOW !!!
Illusions, that's what it's all about.

David Blaine is just a performer. He said so his self. Nothing magical about him either... he said so himself. He just a great performer and no matter how hard you try to understand any of his stunts you won't. I've tried :-)

Not really. He proved his mortality by nearly drowning himself on TV and falling 3 minutes short of his 8 minute mark. He did good with 5 minutes though, just not mind-blowingly great.
