The decision to seek professional help when depressed isn't always very easy.
There are quite a few things that you should consider.
Firstly, when you say your husband is "depressed" - does he feel bad most days?
Does he think that he is depressed?
You also need to consider what costs (if any) there could be from seeking professional help.
I think that if someone is depressed, professional help can be extremely useful, especially if the depressed person also has people around him or her that really care and who are willing to provide support.
Perhaps a good starting point could be for him to see his GP. He doesn't have to go on any medications if he does not wish to. He could get a referral to a psychologist or other mental health practitioner who could provide therapies such as cognitive behaviour therapy.
Seeking professional help for depression or other problems can be a really good idea, even if its just having someone there to talk to about your feelings in a way that you might not be able to with people you really care about.

Yes. I was diagnosed with dysthemia (a class of depression) when I was 18 and all the therapy and drugs didn't help at all. Apparently, according to the headshrinkers I've talked to, I've had it all my life, maybe even when I was born, so I'm guessing that I'm just used to it and can deal with it on my own. But, if it's just a recent problem with your husband, get him professional help; at an older age, it's a lot harder to deal with especially when you've never been depressed before.

I think that your husband should seek professional help because depression is a serious matter. It can cause problems with your marriage, sex life, and even danger his own life. Sometimes suicide is thought of when depressed.

Clinical depression is caused by a chemical imbalance. Many times the only way to treat it is by medications. You did not say how long he has had the depression. The best option at this point is to have him talk with his doctor.Your family doctor can determine if your husband needs to have medication or should see a psychologist or psychiatrist for further treatment and evaluation.
