Diet high in Sodium will tend to lead to one of two consequences: Either the body will quickly get saturated in the required amount of salt and therefore interfere with the hunger-food-hunger cycle, which will lead to development of starvation trends, or if adequate potassium is also being taken in, lead to frequent urination to throw out the excess salt or if you resist the urination trend, to the development of excess body fluid and increase in weight, Blood pressure and Varicosity of Veins, particularly in the Lower limbs. Hyper tension leads to other complications as well.Be moderate in the use of Table saly. Neither less nor more.As with every good thing in life!

High Salt (Sodium) can cause High Blood Pressure.
High Blood Pressure long term contributes to Heart Attack and Stroke.
It is very rare to consume enough salt to have short term consequences, although I have seen rare cases of Electrolyte imbalance (Sodium/Potassium ratio or Sodium/Calcium ratio) which can have many strange and harmful outcomes even deadly.
Table salt is a source of Sodium but by far the worst sources are fast food and canned foods.
A single serving of canned soup can have over 1000 mg of sodium. This is the same as 1/2 tsp of table salt. If you poured 1/2 teaspoon on top of your food you would throw it out as inedible.
See the following for healthy salt consumption guidelines.

found this on the below website...lots of other info there as well...cheers.
If your kidneys can't eliminate enough sodium, the sodium starts to accumulate in your blood. Because sodium attracts and holds water, your blood volume increases. Increased blood volume, in turn, makes your heart work harder to move more blood through your blood vessels, increasing pressure in your arteries. Certain diseases such as congestive heart failure, cirrhosis and chronic kidney disease can lead to an inability to regulate sodium.
Some people are more sensitive to the effects of sodium than are others. People who are sodium sensitive retain sodium more easily, leading to excess fluid retention and increased blood pressure. If you're in that group, extra sodium in your diet increases your chance of developing high blood pressure, a condition that can lead to cardiovascular and kidney diseases

Side effects could be high blood pressure.
Me, I crave salt - especially McDonald's fries!
It is possible to get too much salt. My neighbor is an elderly man who has what looks like a permanent white rash in spots on his arms and legs. He has dark skin so it really stood out. He told me it was from having too much salt.
