It was a date pure and simple. He invited you to his place and then waited on you. A friend would more or less just "grab some take out".

to me it sounds as a friendlyget together. date is usually somewhere out. when a guy is asking to come to his apartment it is either on the further stage, when u become more intimate and comfortable with each other or if it is done at the early stage it is just friendly get together. or he doesn't have any money

Unless he's gay, no guy wants "a friendly get together" with a chick. He just gave you a sweet hug because he's too much of a poosy to close the deal.

Well is he your friend or boyfriend?
Boyfriend=date
friend=not a date
but I'm not even that sure about the boyfriend because if he was your boyfriend and you ended with a hug... I'm not to sure if it was a date.
If you just met the guy I'm think it was a date.
If you knew him for a while but nothing was going on it wasn't a date. Just pick which one you fall under.

Sounds like a Trial date to me, he was just testing the waters to see if he wants to ask you out on a date. Or he was just hoping to get laid but didn't want to push to hard.

That depends: do you want it to have been a date? If you want it to turn into more, ask him nicely what was in his mind. If you aren't interested, assume he thought it was a date and tell him you aren't interested.
Ask yourself why, if you aren't sure, you would expect a stranger to know.

he's trying to make it a date, but it wasn't if he doesn't consider it. he's sorta a wimp if he can't actually ask you out on a date. i think he likes you, but is still trying to get over his ex and taking things slow.
