I'm in manual mode on my Nikon D40. I set the ISO to a specific ISO, but then the camera doesn't actually use that setting when taking the picture. And then when the camera displays the information, it highlights the ISO in red when. Why is it doing that?

Forgot to mention, in the menu, the ISO setting isn't set to auto.

In manual mode, when 'Auto ISO' is on, it overrides your selected ISO setting. This is a bug in the firmware.
The solution is to dive into the menu and turn this feature off.

additional info:

I'm pretty sure this is the problem. This setting is midway down the Custom Settings menu (with the pencil icon.)
I am NOT talking about the options for ISO sensitivity in the Shooting menu (with the camera icon.)

do you have to choose the aperture setting also? When shooting with 35mm in manual mode, you choose aperture and ISO and also flash setting.. Is there anything in your manual about that. I had a Nikon 5700 with all those different settings and I never had good results with the manual setting. Finally got rid of it and now use a good Kodak point and shoot.
