I have heard that it is 3 weeks pay/3months pay/10% of your annual sallary. What i am asking is seriously how much is 'not enough' and how much is 'too much'?? I earn a fairly decent wage, but we are also saving to buy a house together so should the priority be the house or a wizz bang engagement ring? The girl who is receiving, i know will say yes, and is the air that i breathe...

Okay, first of all, you're looking at this from the wrong angle entirely. It's an engagement ring. There's a reason the word "engagement" is first. You should be focused on your fiancee, NOT the ring. A ring isn't even required for an engagement. (Ask Emily Post!)

Get what you can afford. If that's a 3 carat rock, great. If that's a sterling silver band, that's perfectly okay, too. (My mother's first engagement ring was a piston ring!) Some jewelers will tell you 3 months' salary or 10% of your annual income. But any etiquette expert will tell you that those figures are horribly outdated, and are merely a way to get people to spend more.

That said, I recommend BlueNile.com if you want a diamond center-stone ring. They offer many unique choices, and some with matching wedding bands. Go with a ring that has three stones or more; it's more unique and shows that you put some thought into the purchase. If your beloved prefers gemstone jewelry, see your local jeweler about custom setting options. I've seen very elegent sapphire and ruby engagement rings.

Well, you should spend whatever you can afford. It's not about "what is proper" I've never even heard of that. If you are getting ready to buy a house, and can't afford a very nice one, you can always get her a smaller one, and later down the road she can upgrade and get one that she likes better.
As far as where to design one, you can go on
http://www.jared.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Jared/unique/CreateARing.jsp?catalogId=10451&storeId=10451&langId=-1&type=unique
and design one there, but I believe that there are a lot of jewelers which do custom jewelry and you can go in and talk to them about what you wuold like. They can draw up a picture of it, then make a wax model of it so you can see it and tweak it from there.
In the end, I think it's all about being together, not gold and diamonds. If she really loves you, it won't really matter.

I believe it is 2 Months Salary. But my engagement ring is EXACTLY what I want and only cost a third of my fiances salary. I don't mind cuz its what I want. So its really a question of taste. And how big a diamond you want.

Here is a link to design your own. Its also a nice idea to look at a manufacturing jeweler to help you design a ring. My ring was designed and cost less than a premade made store bought one.

3 month's salary is the traditional amount to spend on a ring. Or, you could be like my husband and never even buy an engagement ring or not propose or anything. Don't do that though. lol. Good luck to ya.
