How can I tell it's size by measuring it. I no it's not a small bock and I no it's not a 351m. I took out a small bock and put in the big bock but I cannot get a starter to fit right and work right the fly wheel is ok. The 351m starter seem to small.

The 390-428 series (FE) engines have a valve cover with 5 bolts holding it down. The 429-460 series (385) engines have seven valve cover bolts (per side, of course).

The 400 and 351M uses a 429/460 bolt pattern on the bellhousing. However, the engine's side mounts are the same as a Windsor's or Cleveland's (they're the same). The problem with putting a 400 in a Maverick is the 400 block, being 1 inch taller than the Cleveland; making the "Modified" or "Midland" (the foundry where the 400 blocks were cast) engine wider in an engine bay that's already compromised because of the shock towers. The tall bellhousing of the C6 you'll need will mean "massaging" the trans tunnel with a BFH.

351M and 400 are the same block
460 engine, the starter fits the 2 engines above.
Depending on what you put the engine in, ?????
Make sure that you put the space shield between the transmission and the engine. IF I knew what engine you had before I might have a better idea.
