The year number on the Jewish calendar represents the number of years since creation, calculated by adding up the ages of people in the Bible back to the time of creation. However, this does not necessarily mean that the universe has existed for only 5700 years as we understand years. Many Orthodox Jews will readily acknowledge that the first six "days" of creation are not necessarily 24-hour days (indeed, a 24-hour day would be meaningless until the creation of the sun on the fourth "day"). For a fascinating (albeit somewhat defensive) article by a nuclear physicist showing how Einstein's Theory of Relativity sheds light on the correspondence between the Torah's age of the universe and the age ascertained by science.
Rosh Hashanah -- the Creation of Adam -- is set to be Day 1 of Year 1. In this system, Year 1 begins in September 3760 BCE.

First of all, the people that believe this belong to many different denominations or even none at all. Mormons believe that humans, in our current form, have only been on the earth for 6,000 years or so. But mormons believe that it took much longer to build than seven( or six) days. Sure, our heavenly father only worked for seven days, but I think that you should try forming a near perfect planet in seven days. There has to be millions of years before the planning goes through. It is, current to date, the largest building project ever assigned. The same complications that come when building a building apply here too. there are sketches and re-dos and planning which are just to name a few. hope that helps.

Me!
Since whynotask gave you a rather lengthy list of people with the proper credentials I will not bother to repeat or add to the list.
There are many secular scientist's, chemist's and biologists that are now critical of the old earth theory, with a growing amount of evidence to support their criticism
What fascinates me the most is the people that gave him a thumbs down for an honest and well documented answer. Shows that some just cannot stand any belief but their own. Evolutionists are every bit as dogmatic and fanatical as fundamentalists are!

I have no idea how old the earth is, as not all scientists or geologists agree. And in keeping with the diversity, not all Christian denominations agree. I did once meet someone who believed the earth was only 600 years old and that all archaiological or historical evidence to the contrary had been falsified in the name of false religion and politics. Very strange.

I am Apostolic Pentecostal Christian. I believe that the earth is less than 10,000 years old. My beliefs are based off of my religious scriptures, along with ongoing scientific discoveries.
Evolution is not science. Not insomuch as it gives an answer to how life came to be. Science is defined as a method whereby results can be observed. Evolution is a theory, just like Creationism, which attempts to explain the origins of life. Nothing more, nothing less.

Fundamentalist Christians, as I'm sure you already know. Fundamentalism promotes ignorance. Science, for example is the process of starting with the evidence and proceeding to the conclusion that best fits the evidence, regardless of what that conclusion may be. Fundamentalism, on the other hand, starts with the conclusion and searches for evidence to support the conclusion.
