We live in a rural area, where people dump dogs constantly. The humane society will not pick them up and tell us if we get a tag number, they will charge these people, but this doesn't do alot of good since they dump them about a mile down the road. Most are starving and if we take them to the humane society, they will just be put down(which is better than starving). We feed them and try to find homes, but in our county this is a really big problem. How do you educate people that this is wrong? Is there any thing that can be done about this?

I also live in a rural area where animals are dumped. Unfortunately, living in a farming community people seem to have a "disposable" mentality. If their animal disappears, they'll get a "new" one. Our shelter has been open almost 10 years and people still don't look there for their lost animals, they just get a new one. Or they dump their unwanted animals in the country even though our shelter does not charge a surrender fee (and we are a low kill shelter). Even with educational programs I find this very frustrating. A lot of shelters, like ours, run strictly on donations and it is a tough row to hoe. People are critical of high kill shelters but the sad fact is, if people were responsible or helped their local shelters this would not have to be the way of life for animals. We use foster homes as much as we can for both dogs and cats and colonize as many cats as we can (which keeps them healthier) but in the end, sometimes we have to euthanize-a hard thing to come to terms with as a worker. I take it you have a high kill shelter-maybe fundraising needs to be kicked up to provide the money needed to get animals back on their feet and adoptable. Remember too, that shelter workers and board members get tired-it is a high burnout career. I wish our workers could get paid what they are worth-gold! Unfortunately the pay is low and they are there doing hard physical work for low pay because they love animals. It certainly isn't to get rich! Maybe your local scout troops or church groups could hold fundraisers. No matter the amount, it all helps! Donations of food, litter, toys, towels and bedding are all things desperately needed. As far as education, we go into the grade schools, put up posters, have pets in the paper, cable and radio spots and have billboards. I am at a loss as to how to change mankind at this point. I only know that what I do helps but it is not enough. Thanks for caring and taking in strays.

Short of getting on your local tv station and telling your story, there is really nothing more that you can do. The only way is to educate the people on proper pet care. It is a shame your Humane Society picks and chooses what dogs it takes in and what dogs remain uncared for. I am sure all those dogs appreciate your attempts to feed them. And for all your attempts you should receive some recognition and a thank you. You are a good soul. You do this without giving a thought to cost or inconvenience. You are awesome. Stand up and take a bow and a pat on the back. We need more people like you.

It's SO sad that heartless people dump their dogs like that : (

In a rural area, I don't think there is much you'll be able to do to stop this - You could try putting up a couple of signs, but I doubt it will help.

I think it's GREAT that you are trying to help these dogs by feeding them and trying to find them homes!

No there is nothing that can be done about this, other than catching the people, and making sure everyone knows that if a dog is dumped in your area, they will be caught.

As for educating people not to dump dogs, give me a break. To dump dogs you would have to be a very self-centered person. You decided that you wanted that cute little pup, and when he grew up or chew up something you liked, you decide to dump it.

The only way for this type of person to learn is to hit him where it hurts, the bank account.
