because they've come to the conclusion there is no God? When in all actuality they might be the most ignorant, b/c they don't recognize an intelligent being is the Creator of all the perfection that exists around them. And based on all the major religions, there is hell to pay if you are wrong.

That's true. I read their answers an they have these sassy little remarks that just make them worse than what they believe religious people are like. I have no religion and everytime I say that people think that i'm an athiest and think that i'm a close minded *****. Obviously they got that reputation from somewhere. They probably act that way because they feel like theyre in reality when religious people or anyone who believes in something at all are living in a disney film. Besides most people I know who are athiests are just teenagers or adults trying to be 'edgy' or 'different' when there are hundreds of people like them. No one's an individual so why feel superior? They feel smarter? Compared to what? Humans? We've gotten immature and less intelligent over the years so why bother?? Hope this answers your question.

I dont know whether most atheist think they are smarter. But many atheist and people who are not atheist also, ignore the fact there is a creator though they see a world that is created with food to eat and oxygen to breathe and is perfect for living before they were born, because they do not want to be controlled by any external factor which will make them realize of their wrongdoings and make them feel guilty. For some they cannot enjoy life, some postpone good things for tomorrow. But many search God when they have a problem which is beyond their capacity to solve. But God's love is so much that He answers them, cause He created them and died for their sins, so that without guilt they can stand before Him one day.

The foremost religion in society today, goes by the belief of, "do the best you can and hope you're right." They don't really care if they're right or wrong, because they have no concept of salvation. They believe they're smarter than Christians and all other religions, because they take the words of some book or person, as their belief basis. (As apposed to a divine being.) They trust in the knowledge of man, rather than the knowledge of God or a "divine being." (I am trying to answer the question with all religions in mind, because you did not state any specifically. This is hard because I am Christian, so bear with me.) They hate the concept of anything creating them, or being above them. They throw out any concept that has anything to do with creationism, or a divine being, because that would imply that there is something greater than man, or themselves. They believe they are too "smart" to believe in "myths" or "fairy tales." Hence the lack of respect is driven from their thoughts of religious people being unintelligent and mislead. Generally it's the idea that we are unintelligent, because we believe in something we cannot see.

In my experiences, atheists don't try to act smart because they are atheists. There has been considerable studies showing the more intelligent a person is, the less likely they are to believe in God. So maybe all the atheists you talk to are scientists or something.

Why are you so arrogant? You say that there is a God no matter what and atheists just don't get it. That arrogance is one of my biggest problems with some religious people. That makes you look like you are the one who thinks they are smart just because they believe in God.

Peace!
Actually they do. In answer to a question I posted on this section an atheist said they are more intelligent than me. Assuming they are, isn't there a better way of saying that?
Atheists are very assertive but sometimes they go out of bounds. Let me cite an article published by beliefnet.com about their tendency to be impolite.
In the article, "Bullied and Brainwashed" written by Gregg Easterbrook, Richard Dawkins, who is considered as the most forceful proponent of atheism today, was quoted as having said believers are "ignorant, stupid or insane," unless they are "wicked." The article went on to ask: "Isn't there some way we can discuss God versus Darwin in civil tones?"
You be the judge.

Good point! And just think how ignorant you'll feel if you die and find out that one of the pagan gods that Christianity supplanted is actually the creator. You'll have more Hell to pay than atheists!

After all, pagan religions are older than Judaism or Christianity... They were around closer to "creation", so they could actually be right about there being more than one sky-faerie

Personally, I'll stick with the "no god thing", thank you very much...

Smart people don't make claims they can't prove, ie. "I know there's a cretin - oops, creator".

What makes atheists smarter is that we claim uncertainty and are constantly on the lookout for facts. All godbots like yourself claim infinite knowledge when you insist on being a know-nothing.

Atheists and theists both have the same brains, but one chooses to use it, the latter chooses wilful ignorance.

No. I am athiest, and you may be right. I wish I could believe, but I can't. To compare what it feels like imagine trying to put faith in santa claus, easter bunny, tooth fairy, leprechauns..the list goes on. Religious people have a sort of inner peace to them (some) that is calming to me. I envy them. but I just can't....

Anyways...I don't think I am smarter than anyone else, and don't think believers are wasting there time. Good for them!

Is it 'smarter' to believe God exists, or to believe there is no higher power? Who knows? I'm an athiest, myself, but I don't judge the intelligence of others on their religion (unless they're giving all their money to a church that's obviously just lining its own coffers instead of helping people). I think perhaps you think less of me for *my* beliefs. If they turn out to be wrong, let me worry about that.

I don't believe that the average atheist thinks he or she is smarter than everyone else. What I do think is that the average atheist would like people to stop trying to smother him/her in various religions of which they want no part. In other words, leave people alone to lead the lives they choose,
