i wouldn't be of any help without seeing what you are talking about. the only thing i know of is a dog with a cleft palate. i'm sure it's happened with the lip, but i've just never seen it. if you have pics that would be great. might have some dental problems later on, i don't know? sorry.

One of the techs I work with has a boxer who has a cleft lip. The breeder couldn't bear to put it down because he was eating well, not having problems breathing, etc. The breeder gave him to her because my friend already had two other boxers, would have him examined by a specialist to see if surgery was required, would have him neutered, and would be committed to seeing him through any problems that could arise. The surgeon who examined him said anything he would have to do would be purely cosmetic, so my friend chose to let him be.

He is now a year old, neutered, and amazingly beautiful and muscular. Cleft lips, as you already know, are very different from cleft palates. The only thing she had to do extra as a puppy was to make sure the area where the lip joined the nostril was kept clean, because it was open.

Each situation is different in that they warned her he could have other problems. So far so good though. Whatever you decide, good luck.

I think I'd best prepare you. On December 20th, my Chihuahua had three puppies. One had a cleft palate, we knew something was wrong with him, because he had a small hole next to one of his nostrils. He was put to sleep the next morning by the vet. The vet explained that he would not be able to nurse, 'cause the milk would go down the wrong tube and into his lungs, he said,he would need to be tube fed every two hours for 12 weeks and if he survived he could then have surgery with no guarantees of surviving the surgery. The vet felt it was more humane to euthanize him. I truly hope that is not the case with your puppy, but your description of the upper lip missing is familiar. Our puppy had a hole in his face and it appeared that parts of his lips were missing.

If it is just in the lip, it should not bother the puppy. Most can easily be corrected with a simple surgery.
