i noticed today that his eye is swollen, and he has a clear discharge coming from his eye. the area around his eye is puffy, and the color of his eye looks dull. he keeps scratching his eye, and rubbing it on whatever he can rub it on. has anybody else ever had this happen? what is it? what can i do to make him more comfortable untill i can get him in to see the vet? thanks

im sure u had given ur kitty a bath due to which water entered his eyes. i'd done something similiar once to my kitty and she started to get swollen eyes with discharge too. the next time u give ur kitty a bath, make sure u lightly rub vaseline around his eye (on the lids), ensuring that the jelly does not enter his eye. that will protect his sensitive eyes. remember that cats have very delicate eyes and cannot stand water.

first stay calm. I know all about this and it happens to my cats all the time. It most of the time happens to kittens but it can happen to older cats too. I dont know the specific name for it but what you need to do is about 2 or 3 times a day wipe the eye down with a towel with warm water. it should start getting better in a few days or so. Its no big deal to us because we get it all the time. sometimes its two eyes at a time sometimes just one. If you feel you need to take him to the vet then do it but i assure you ive had cats for the past 15 years and I know what to do. they will scratch at it and it will get puffy and sometimes it may stay crusted close but MAKE SURE you always rub it till it stays open. dont let the cat have its eye closed. it could cause damage. the discharge is kinda white and yellow right? if so I know exactly what it is. just follow my directions and e-mail me if you need me.. meghansavageisontheroll@yahoo.com hope everything turns out ok!!!!

If this is an eye infection or maybe a scratched eye go to the grocery store and buy camomile tea. Make a pot of tea (don't put anything in it) let it cool and then bath the eye with a soaked piece of cloth or cotton swab. The camomile plant has healing properties in it. The vet gave me expensive medication for an eye infection my cat had. It didn't work but the camomile did. I only had to do it twice and the cat was like new. I did it while she was sleeping and kind of covered her whole eye before she had a chance to run away. That's all it took.

Is the eye pinkish? My mom's one cat had a swollen eye that was pinkish/reddish. We took her to the vet and she had pink eye which is contageous to others. She was given antibiotics and medication for her eye. My mom had to wait to get to the vet also and got a wash cloth, soaked it with warm water and placed it on the cats eye. This helped reduce the swelling. Use a cotton ball moistened with warm water and wipe the eye gently. This helps clear the discharge safely. Use the wash cloth after you clean the eye. As for keeping him from rubbing the eye, unless you have a funnel type collar to put around his neck, take some stiff but flexable cardboard, form a cone with it and tape it around the neck. You'll need to cut the smaller end just big enough to fit around his neck. Tag board works well also. This should help. My mom's cats are indoor only too.

You need to get him to a vet right away, can you take him to a emergency vet ? iF you wait too long it may lead to permant damage to the eye. He may have a foreign body , dust, splinter, etc. in his eye. Have you tried using a flashlight to see if you can see anything in his eye? If you do see something in his eys, do not try to take it out by yourself, more than likely it is too painful, he needs to be given medicine to relieve the pain, and you could get bit as well as making the injury worse, see a vet and let them take care of it.Are his eyes dilated or pinpointed? He sounds like he is rubbing his eye because of pain and irritation. the only thing I have ever done while waiting to see the vet, is to apply a warm compress, not cold and not too hot. to the eye, but he may not allow you. If he has some sort of foreign object ( sounds like he does,) then rubbing it can make it worse, and of course all he knows to do is to rub, because he doesnt know how else to get it out. Like I said again, try to get him in NOW. the fact that he has a clear discharge is the one good thing. If it was green or yellow, that would be a sign of a cold or infection.. Keep him out of drafts, or cold rooms till he sees a dr. He may have sensitive eyes to the light, and a darkened room may be better till he gets to a vet. Good luck and let me know what the vet says.

You might want to see if there is a different vet that has emergency hours. It does sound rather serious, maybe a damp warm cloth, if you hold it gently against the eye for a bit, you cat may have a little of relief.
Good luck, I hope your kitty is alright.

Kittens are known to get respiratory infections, which includes discharge and irritated eyes. Have you gotten the kitten its shots?? The FVRCPP kitten shots focus mainly on respiratory issues and diseases. You need to take the cat to the vet for antibiotics. PLEASE DO NOT PUT ANYTHING ON THE EYE WITHOUT TALKING TO A VET!! Once she is done with the antibiotics and looking good, then get her vaccinations if you havent already!

This could be a number of problems -- distemper, eye infection -- but it's definitely dangerous. Call the vet back and see if you can't get him in Tuesday.

Please take your cat to the vet ASAP - he may lose his eye! It will be hard to keep him from rubbing it, he is in major pain! Try giving him some food and water to distract it.
I wish you and youyr kitty the best!
