I know it's a pain, but yes, you absolutely need to have a fitting. You can probably find a place that's cheaper, though.

As an optician I would say yes. When the doctor examines you for contacts they measure your base curve of your eye, and everyone can have a different size.(All contacts have different sizes) They also look at other things like if your eyes are lacking moisture or if you have allergies.( There are different types of contacts for different conditions) These are all things not checked for in a regular eyeglass examination.
If you've already had the exam and the "fitting" is just to teach you how to put on and use the contacts, then I say that should have been included in your contact lens exam. I have worked for many doctors and we have always included the exam and fitting in one price, which 99 dollars is about average for the contact exam.
I hope this helps and also reassures you about the price. People don't realize how delicate your eyes are and when wearing contacts you definitely need to be wearing the proper type for your eyes.

I would say so if you want proper fitted contacts and trust me you do. The doctor will have you try on different lenses to see which one fits the best without sliding around or scratching on your eye. If they don't fit properly then you'll never be able to stand to wear them for any length of time and you've wasted all your money. Better be safe than sorry.

The doctor should have done the fitting right there for you. He does the measure of your eye. Eye doctors when they give you your prescription it is like mine for example: -2.75 curve 8.3 dia 14. That is all you need to get your contacts.

I have no idea. I always use my fingers without contact lens fitting. Maybe you can try if you can put on your contact lenses well without fitting.

Yes it is. Not all eyes are the same, so your optometrist must go in and measure. What this does is allows you greater comfort and you won't run the risk of blinking them out.

It may be something new. I don't think I've ever been fitted. I didn't even know they came in different sizes. by fitted you don't mean your prescription, do you? if yes then ofcourse you need to see what your prescription is.
