Birds are not "pregnant" like a mammal. The eggs are fertilized shortly before they are layed. Canaries usually produce clutches of 4 to 6 eggs. The eggs take from 13 to 14 days to hatch from the time that the mother starts sitting on them.

By the way, in the wild the hen wont start sitting until the last egg is laid, so the eggs will all hatch at the same time. This is good because a canary chick will double in size from day 1 to day 2. If there is a much larger chick it will push the younger chicks out of the way and they will starve.
