Looking for a nice place to live?

Where is a nice place to live in England preferably a village or small town that isnt to far from a large city.

Screw Croydon. It's a hell hole. Try Wheatley in Oxfordshire. Quite lovely in fact.

Ottery St Mary, East Devon. 11 miles out of Exeter, Ottery is the birthplace of Samuel Taylor Coleridge and is over 1000 years old. It's a small town (or a large village) which is not precious in that touristy way - no thatched cottages, no horse brasses in the pubs. Family owned shops selling locally produced food. An excellent bookshop, at least one good restaurant, a couple of banks and a Library. And a gorgeous 13th century church, good schools, and I will now shut up as it's far too popular already.

Having said all that, I still live in London and always will, but I have relatives in Ottery and visit often, and if I ever left London, this is where I'd go.

I live in a lovely village in Essex (stop laughing!) there are two fabulous pubs a village store and a butchers. The Church of England school here is so lovely and there is no bullying. The villagers are very friendly and helpful and although we've only lived here for 4 years they treat us as if we've known them forever. We are approx' 30 mins drive away from London and 1 hour from Colchester. We have a 20 min' drive to the coast and 5 min's to the Thames. The transport links are excellent.

I'm in Skelmanthorpe in West Yorkshire which is not a bad place to live. We have a Co-op here with a pharmacy next door to it, plus a smaller general store, newsagents, brilliant health centre, 4 pubs, numerous take aways, opticians, dentist (private), small bank, lots of hairdressers etc etc etc. We have a great cricket team, male voice choir and a renowned brass band. There are plenty of smaller villages and such around us and we are fairly central to a lot of places...

Mileage is approx'

Sheffield = 25 miles
Manchester = 35 miles
Leeds = 25 miles
Liverpool = 65 miles
York = 60 miles
Hull = 60 miles

Closer to home we have...

Huddersfield = 8 miles
Barnsley = 8 miles
Wakefield = 9 miles

All in all it's a great area to live in...

There are lots of villages in England it depends where abouts in the country you want to live in.
I think a good place would be somewhere in Devon as there are lots of quiet villages there, but, Devon isn't as remote as Cornwall so you can access more places.

The Lake district but Leeds is a good distance. The Peak district has Sheffield and Derby nearby but neither are great cities. Cheshire is proably the best as Manchester and Liverpool are close and good cities unlike Bristol and Hull.

Try doing what I did and leave the sinking ship. I live now in a beautiful country where I am the foreigner, but am treated as a friend wherever I go. You won't get that in England.

try Henley in Arden or stratford upon avon, or any of the surrounding villages and towns, maximum of half an hour from Birmingham, or if you dont mind adding another 15 mins to the journey to birmingham, you are in the cotswolds and that my friend is a pretty nice place to be!

Westerham, Kent - it's 14 miles from London, and on the Kent/Surrey border. Fantastic restaurants and lovely shops and pubs. Surrounded by countryside but close to connections i.e. M25, train stations etc but far enough away.

What about Runcorn? My friend lives there it is a lovely town. It is also close to Manchester and Liverpool :) I'm from Australia and I went to visit her I just loved the friendly atmosphere there.
