If you only have liability you are going to have to pay for the damages yourself. Your friends homeowners insurance will not pay for the damages to your vehicle. You would need to have comprehensive coverage to cover the damage to your vehicle.

You need comprehensive, collision, or both classes of insurance for natural disasters such as that. The insurance company will pay for the damage if it is covered, however, look out, your rates WILL go up until that amount paid is paid back. Insurance is a gamble, and your premiums are used by the insurance company for investing. They don't want to pay out anything, and will get it back. It is unfair, but that is the way they operate. Insurance could be called legalized extortion. The best thing you can do is to either live with this, or keep a small account open and set money aside to pay for damages yourself when it is a no fault situation. If someone hits you, sue them for damages.

If you only have liability insurance your insurance will not cover the damages. If the tree was on your friends property, his homeowner's policy normally will cover the damage. However, the deductible on many homeowner's policies is quite high compared to the deductible on auto policies. Mine is $2,500, for example. If the damages are less than the deductible there won't be any payment due.

The damage would be covered under the comprehensive coverage on your auto insurance. The owner of the tree is not responsible to pay for the damage.

Our homeowners insurance would cover it if you were @ my house. I would have your insurance company check their home owners insurance policy otherwise you may have to total your car with your insurance depending on where you live!
