One option is to seek donations. But your best bet is to seek for private grants or grants from private foundations.

The best resource for this is Foundation Center http://www.fdncenter.org . They have a very good database covering all organizations giving grants and you can find foundations that are interested in supporting your type of cause. However, it's a subscription based website ($19.95 per month I think is the cheapest subscription price). But it certainly is worth the fee. You can subscribe one month, and make sure you get all the info you need and then stop the subscription.

If you want to try federal sources, you can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov - these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants.

CFDA has several ways to search for grants. I suggest you search by beneficiary and select Private Non Profit Organization and you can find listings of grants available http://12.46.245.173/pls/portal30/CATALOG.BROWSE_BENEF_RPT.show

Yup, start calling your major businesses. Or if you are a little unsure, then write out a business letter asking for donations. You'd be surprised at how many are willing to help if you just ask. You are doing a very noble thing that is helping your community honey. Make sure you put that into your letter. A sort of mission statement if you will and an explanation of what your money is going to. Then, in additin to that, start calling around to you local Goodwills, Salvation Armies and large retail stores (walmart, Kmart, target) and see if they would like to contribute. Lots of times they donate toiletries, blankets, etc. After that, you can also contact your local govenment, become a Tax-exempt facitlity and then apply for benefits from the state in regards to lower utilities, and more funding opportunities.

I believe the majority of big money will only come through grants. Do you live in a major city? If so check with the Mayor's department. I think there is a way they can assist you in getting the things you need, but I believe the main thing you are going to need if you want to help people in your own facility is insurance. So look into the mayor's department.

75% of the money that goes to charity comes from individuals, and another 10% comes through wills and bequests. Foundations give about 10% and corporations give 5%. So, individuals will give you money but you have to ask.

Try churches and houses of worship first, as they will donate money and give you access to people who can help. You'll want to put together a committee of people who can help you. Start by having talks in people's living rooms. Ask them to ask their friends. Invite them for coffee or tea. Talk about your work. You can even bring someone who needs help. Ask for money, and tell what it will be used for.

If you don't have tax-deductible status, ask a church or house of worship to sponsor you. They'll put the donations through their checking account and do the proper reports. You can pay less than 10% of donations for this, maybe only 1%, and it's called being a "fiscal sponsor."

Hope that helps, good luck!
