I had a buffet-style dinner party the other day and when I tossed the salad lettuce and my white creme dressing went flying all over the buns and spotted dick. It was an embarrassing moment to say the least. Some even went all over my dinner guests. So I would like to know, when is a good time to toss salad. I had just taken mine out of the fridge, maybe the lettuce was too cold? Please, some help me sort out my predicament!

Allow me to clarify, perhaps in the States this can be construed as a sexual act, but I am from England and I am being serious. Spotted dick is a delicious dish.

There are two schools of thought on this matter. One says that you may toss the salad when the dinner guests open their buns. The other school believes that it is not inappropriate to take the bull by the horns and apply the white creme dressing to the buns before tossing the salad. Happy tossing, old chap!

Send the quest out to swing on the play equipment and toss the salad in your privacy. Guest never want to see accidents happen especially when creme dressing if flying around. Salad best served at room temperature.

I'm not sure the temperature had to do with it -- salad is supposed to be cold. I think the salad may not have been in a big enough bowl.
BTW, what's spotted dick? I read your comment that it is a dish, but what's in it?

I wouldn't want my salad icy cold anyway. Chills the dickens out of my teeth! What's wrong with using a closed up tub and shaking it? Is there some British protocol that says it MUST be flipped up in the air openly? -Or do like Stanley did in that old Laurel & Hardy movie...serve the salad without dressing.

take the salad out of the fridge and let it set for about 15 minutes or so to adjust to room temperature then put the dressing on and toss away!

im thinkin u pulled it out too early...let it set in for a little while longer next time then pull out but toss it first so the mess stays in the fridge
