All of my kids were 4 years old. They didnt want the training wheels on the bike anymore. It only took a few lessons to get them going on their own.

My son and nephews NEVER rode bikes with training wheels. They taught themselves to ride the bikes without them so that they could be able to keep up with the older kids in the neighborhood. My son was a couple months shy of turning 5 when he mastered it and my nephews were maybe 6 years old by the time they learned. Not all kids need training wheels anyway.

My siblings were 9, 7, and 4 (I trained the 4 yr old). It all depends on the child. You just have to wait until THEY are ready. Most of the time they have the wheels on and won't even been using them which is usually a good time to suggest taking them off.
