The bottom line is always always economics. But religion divides and fuels people into doing awful things. Get rid of religion, and maybe people would finally see each other for what they are. Humans. Just humans looking for a better life.

As an evangelical Christian, I think you're 100% correct. As John Lennon said (paraphrased) "If nobody believed there was a God, or Heaven or Hell, or Satan.... there would be no conflict in this world.

However, there would also be no peace. The conflict and strife that exist are there because Satan is struggling to keep us FROM God. If 100% of people decided that God did not exist, Satan would be perfectly happy - he'd allow us all to live without conflict, knowing that he'd have us all in Hell in the end - so no need to fight.

Peace, however is what we have when we are reconciled with God. Jesus came to be the bridge we need to regain the relationship that was lost by Adam and Eve.

IF the ultimate goal was lack of conflict while here on earth, it would work...... but that's not the ultimate goal, now is it?

No, there would still be conflict. Alot of conflicts are characterized as being over religion, but often this is just a way of identifying the different factions. For instance people that don't understand the conflict in Northern Ireland usually say and think that it is because of religion. It just so happens that the Unionists are mostly Protestant and the Republicans are mostly Catholic. They are fighting over territory and rights. they are not fighting over/about their religions.

Well, if the Christian fundamentalist right hadn't spent the last 7 years destroying our reputation in the world, we might have more credibility and more bargaining power. I am not sure if the absence of religion would change much though. Perhaps the absence of fundamentalism-- both Christian and Islamic-- at least from the realm of politics-- might make a difference.
