Yep, you can put whatever you want on there. I don't know if there was a special regulation passed to allow that, or when it was, but since we live in a free country they can't tell us how or even to believe in God.
And yes, michael, religious preference is included on dogtags so if they need to do rites for you on a right-now basis, they know how to proceed with it. Jews, Catholics and Protestants may all believe in the same God, but their method of worship varies greatly.

I was in the USMC in 99 and i have not religeous/no religion put on mine can't remember which to be exact though. Just because you want to serve your country doesn't mean you have to believe in God.

Separation of church and state- like guy #1 said- but did you know that they can have "Jedi" as their religion as well?! Jedi- I think thats the big question instead of Atheist.
