I believe there are only 5 breeds of dog that can smile. They have the correct facial muscles to do this.

depends on the dog. english bulldogs, pugs and the like with short noses when panting always appear to be smiling. if you see a dog "smiling" while showing teeth. walk slowly backwards, this is anything but a smile. my shep mix will pull back her lip area around her molars when her belly is scratched.

I wouldn't get too close to a smiling dog. Our miniature schnauzer Mitzi only smiled right before she threw up.

My 5 1/2 month old Bichonpoo smiles whenever I talk nice to her or someone else speaks sweetly to her and pets her.

my friend had a dog that where you rub him on his back in a certain area the dog actually smiles its funny =[)

It looks like they're smiling when they're panting. They also smile when they are pleased, ie. getting a treat.
